The most common association for Capricorn is a forest deity called Pan – who had the legs and horns of a goat. He was placed amongst the stars by Zeus as an honor for having helped the gods several times. On one of these occasions, Pan is said to have eluded the monster Typhon by jumping into a lake and transforming its legs into the tail of a fish. Thus, Capricornus is still represented as a goat with a fishtail.
